Some very dear and lifelong friends of ours were in town from Arizona... James, Luis, and Luis' new girlfriend, Christina. My Aunt Karen and Uncle Dick hosted a little Fall bonfire and gathering for everyone to visit with them. It was a great time and so wonderful to reunite again. I have not seen Luis since 2001, and it's been even longer for James.
James and Luis are very special to us. Luis is physically disabled and his speech is very hard to understand. We have been friends with them our entire lives. My brother, Ian, and Luis had an extraordinary connection from the moment they met. Luis was one of my brother's best friends. Luis would come to visit every summer throughout our childhood. His physical disability did not matter to Ian, and it never phased him. Ian was one of the few people who could even understand what Luis was saying. I remember Luis visiting my brother's grave site and he fell to his knees sobbing. I will never forget that moment. I am sure when Luis sees us, he still thinks of Ian, the way Ian loved him, and the special friendship they once had. Tonight, Luis was laughing and it sounded a little different than what Sophie was used to hearing. Her face just lit up with a smile, and I was so proud of the way she responded to him.
I hope that we may always continue to stay in touch. Way to go, Luis, on your new girl! She is adorable and so sweet!
